“When you buy an engagement ring for your girlfriend, isn’t she supposed to buy one for you later?”

I was recently asked the question above. In fact, I have been asked it a few times. It is a very good question and I figured you should know what is commonly done. If you are one for tradition, then traditionally speaking, it is the Man that purchases the engagement ring for his bride to be. While the bride to be does purchase a ring for her betrothed, it is not considered and engagement ring. It is considered a “wedding band.” However, the wedding band for the man is not purchased until right before the actual wedding date.

The tradition of men wearing wedding bands goes back to World War II. So, you could say it is a fairly young tradition. Especially when you consider that women have been wearing rings as early as ancient Egyptian times. Military men started wearing wedding bands during World War II as a reminder of their commitment to their loved one back in the good old US of A. It wasn’t until approximately the 1950’s that mainstream or non-military men started sporting wedding rings.

Men’s wedding bands now days consist of basic plain metal bands to decorative wedding bands. Decorative wedding bands can include gemstones such as diamonds. Others may prefer simple metal designs or more elaborate hand engraved carvings. Custom design wedding bands are also a way to own something unique that no one else has. So, whatever tickles your fancy is what you might to start dropping hints about to your future fiance’.

What do I do with my diamond engagement ring from my first marriage?

We are constantly asked the question –

What do I do with my diamond engagement ring from my first marriage?” There are numerous things we can suggest to do with your old diamond engagement ring. Other than just selling it outright, you may want to think about letting a jewelry professional design and create something new for yourself. If not for yourself, then perhaps a loved one? Even though the diamond is from another marriage, it still represents a memorable time in your life. Were there children from your previous marriage? If so, surely you know that your children were the result of that initial love you once shared with your former spouse. I am not sure what the circumstances of your first marriage were. However, you may still have positive feelings and memories about that joyous time in your life. It’s something to consider.

While I am not sure of the size or shape of the diamond, a number of ideas come to mind for a special piece of jewelry. It may be something as simple as a drop diamond pendant. Or perhaps something more decorative by adding some lovely color to the design. By color I mean colored gemstones. A birthstone may be nice. If not your birthstone then perhaps a color that is representative of one of your children? Again, depending on the circumstances, maybe even the birthstone of you previous husband.

What about a new custom design for you or your children?

A newly created custom design using your old diamond(s) would be a perfect for your children. Perhaps the main center stone could be used for a future engagement ring? Or what about a graduation gift or other momentous occasion? While I could go on and on with suggestions, you may need to think a bit more about which direction you want to go in by way of for a family member or not. I hope this helps.

.. pick out the perfect center diamond and had it delivered to our hotel where we were staying ..

We had a great experience working with Joseph to get our engagement ring! He worked with my fiance before we got engaged to pick out the perfect center diamond and had it delivered to our hotel where we were staying when my fiance proposed. Afterwards he helped us create a gorgeous engagement ring and wedding band. Neither of us knew that much about the jewelry design process, but he was incredibly helpful and super accommodating even when I changed my mind about a detail at the last moment. We’re really happy with the rings that we got and I continue to get compliments on how beautiful and unique my engagement ring is. We’re so happy that he was there during this fun and exciting time in our lives!   ~Renuka Rayasam

“Who is better for a colored a diamond report, I.G.I. or G.I.A. ?

I was recently asked the above question about lab grading reports for colored diamonds. I would have to say that I am more partial to colored diamond reports from the Gemological Institute of America (G.I.A.). In my 30 plus years of experience in the jewelry industry, I have never been disappointed by a colored diamond lab grading report from G.I.A. After all, there is a reason G.I.A. is referred to as “The Worlds Most Foremost Authority in Gemology.”

International Gemological laboratory (I.G.I.) is a legitimate gemological laboratory. However, It is my experience that most professional gemstone dealers and consumers prefer G.I.A. lab grading reports to an I.G.I. lab grading report. I hope this helps.

What determines the value of a diamond?

The value of a diamond is determined by the 4C’s.

Time and time again people ask – “What determines the value of a diamond?”

The most common answer is the 4C’s. Diamonds are a miracle of time. No two are exactly alike. GIA developed an agreed-upon standard to judge diamonds. The Gemological Institute of America (G.I.A.), created the first, and now globally accepted standard for describing diamonds: Color, Clarity, Cut and Carat Weight. As a result, the 4C’s of diamond quality is the most widely accepted method of determining the quality of a diamond, anywhere in the world.

As a result, the creation of the 4C’s meant two very important things: 1) Diamond quality could be communicated in a universal language. 2) Diamond customers could now know exactly what they were about to purchase. Having said that, seek out advice from a professional jeweler. A local jeweler will have your best interest in mind. It is to his advantage to properly educate you the customer about diamonds and other gemstones.

Determine what is relevant to you. Compare shop. Look at several diamonds in your price range. Afterwards, determine what is best for you and your pocket book. Other good resource’s are your family members and friends. They are always happy to share their experience’s with you – good and bad.

In conclusion, we suggest you learn more about choosing a diamond that is right for you.

How much does it cost to buy a normal diamond engagement ring?

We get this question often. “How much does it cost to buy a normal diamond engagement ring?”

That depends on what you mean by “normal.” I don’t think its really about averages or what others are paying.

Purchasing a diamond engagement ring is a personal and emotional endeavor. However, it doesn’t doesn’t have to be a costly one. Always remember, you are in control of your own spending and budget. That’s right! It is your decision to make. Having said that, it helps to have a professional on your side. A pro to help guide you in a direction suitable for your loved one as well as your pocketbook. So, seek out a local jewelry professional who is both knowledgeable and trustworthy. Make note that I said “local.” Your local jeweler will be your best resource.

The cost of a diamond engagement ring can vary. My suggestion is to first get and idea of what you want. Research shop. Go out to jewelry stores that carry quality product and ask the questions that are most important to you. Is Carat Weight important? Or is diamond Color or Clarity most important? Perhaps it is a combination of the above? Once you have determined what is most important, then look at each prospective engagement ring with a critical eye. Ask what the particulars are of that diamond ring. Have the sales person clearly explain why that ring or diamond commands that sale price. Then compare the particulars of that engagement ring or diamond to others.

Before you do so, it will be most helpful to first arm your self with the basics – the 4 C’s of diamonds. Afterwards, you will be a bit more knowledgeable and confident about your purchase. After all, knowledge is a good thing!

diamond refractive index

What is the refractive index of diamond?

Good Question. What is diamond refractive index ?

First it is important to know what “refractive index” means. In the most basic of terms, a refractive index is a comparison of the measure of the speed of light from one medium to another. In this case we are talking about the measure of the speed of light as it travels through diamond compared to speed of light through air. Diamonds refractive index is a measurement of 2.417. This means that light travels through a diamond 2.417 times faster than it travels through air.

According to Websters dictionary, this is their definition of refractive index is : the ratio of the speed of radiation (such as light) in one medium (such as air, glass, or a vacuum) to that in another medium.

Different gemstones will have different refractive indexes. However, if i am not mistaken, diamond has the highest refractive index of most natural gemstones.

Joseph and Malcolm are true teachers

Joseph and Malcolm are true teachers. They helped me navigate, come up with ideas, put my vision into drawings, then CADs and finally bring it to life. They were a pleasure to work with. I would say that the CAD images aren’t very accurate; they don’t do the final piece justice, so in a good way! I would recommend them to anyone looking for custom jewelry.

Millennial women, Millennials, engagement diamond ring average price, Villarreal Designers of Exquisite Jewelry

Millennial Women Want These 2 Qualities in Their Diamonds

A good deal of our clients are millennials. especially millennial women looking for diamonds. I came across this article today and thought it was spot on. What do you think?

ARTICLE BY: INSTORE STAFF

DPA (Diamond Producers Association) released a new poll.

When buying luxury goods such as diamonds, millennial women are looking for authenticity and long-term value, according to a new study commissioned by the Diamond Producers Association.

The poll of nearly 1,000 millennial women found that nearly 9 in 10 (89 percent) look for authenticity in such items. This tendency was even greater among high-earning millennials, with 85 percent saying they would be embarrassed knowing that they owned a knock-off, especially for luxury items.

Millennial women seek long-term value – emotionally and financially – from such purchases. Seventy-five percent saw diamond jewelry as an investment in themselves and 82 percent saw it as a long-term investment. Among the highest-earning millennials ($150,000+) these numbers these numbers were higher, at 94 percent and 91 percent, respectively.

The DPA said these statistics help explain why millennial self-purchase of diamonds continues to grow. A recent De Beers report stated that self-purchase by U.S. millennials accounted for 31 percent of all non-bridal diamond sales in 2015, compared with 25 percent in 2013.

“Millennial consumers in particular are defining luxury beyond price,” said Deborah Marquardt, chief marketing officer for the DPA. “When evaluating luxury purchases, they seek items that are genuine, unique and not mass-produced, and have inherent meaning and value. This preference speaks directly to the diamond promise – in an increasingly artificial world diamonds remain authentic, rare and precious.”

Luxury goods offer modern women a way to visually express their self-confidence, with 66 percent of millennial women saying they feel more confident in themselves when wearing diamond jewelry, according to DPA.

On behalf of DPA’s “Real is a Diamond,” the survey was conducted online by KRC Research from July 10 to July 14 among 995 millennial women between the ages of 18-34 in the U.S. with a margin of error of +/- 3 percent.
