Our (Villarreal Fine Jewelers) Response to the above article.
The bottom line is – when consumers purchase a diamond from local jewelry stores, they are buying just that, a diamond. They are not buying a “piece of paper” or in this case a lab grading report. This is why education is paramount for consumers when considering a diamond purchase.
Therefore, in my opinion it is the responsibility of the wholesaler and retail jeweler to educate and represent diamonds and diamond rings in an ethical and responsible manner. When jewelers choose to act to the contrary, then there should be consequences for their actions. Perhaps then, dishonest jewelers can no longer claim ignorance or solely blame inaccurate diamond grading on a particular lab grading report. You should know what you are selling!
At Villarreal Fine Jewelers, we take pride and confidence in offering diamonds graded by The Gemological Institute of America. In my opinion, GIA offers the most consistent and accurate lab grading in the industry. Having said that, we don’t just rely on what the grading report says. We also rely on our own years of education and expertise.
